Gopher Muster March 2011
Southcare’s team members were easily recognisable in their red shirts, at the third Annual Gopher Muster on Sunday 27th March. Southcare’s New Horizon Day Centre clients arrived by Southcare bus or independently to join members of the South Perth Senior Citizen’s Centre in gopher races followed by a BBQ and Devonshire tea and coffee, courtesy of the South Perth Seniors Citizens. The occasion was part of the City of South Perth Fiesta.
The Gopher races were a highlight for the many members of the community who came to watch them and then take part in the successful Angelo Street Marketplace which was awash with colour and creativity when Unwrapped: the Marketplace hit the street as the final event of Fiesta 2011. Unwrapped supports local emerging artists and designers enabling them to showcase products to the public.
Southcare’s clients and their families then browsed the stalls and enjoyed the live music on stage. They were able to sample delicious foods and watch the fashion parades. Seating and colourful umbrellas gave them some respite from the midday sun.
The fun day was declared a great success. Southcare’s New Horizons Day Centre provides services for the frail aged and people with a disability in the City of South Perth and surrounding areas. The focus is on providing some support so they can continue to live independently and still enjoy social interaction. Clients usually spend a day at the centre where they enjoy a variety of activities and cooked lunch. The Southcare bus will pick them up and return them safely home. The bus does have facilities for anyone in a wheelchair. Staff and volunteers ensure that the each visit is stimulating and interesting. Special outings on a Sunday, like the Gopher Muster, are always especially popular with team members and clients.
