Bickley Club Dementia Respite

The Bickley Club is situated in a house within the Southcare complex. It allows Southcare to offer a programme especially for people who have dementia and aims to provide a very supportive environment for its members as well as providing respite and support for carers. Bickley Club offers a secure, comfortable and home-like setting with specially selected and trained staff and volunteers to care for the confused person.

Transport

The centre will transport members to and from the centre by bus or car. One of the main aims is to provide support for carers who may work, have medical appointments or other occasional or regular commitments. Attendance hours can be flexible and members can visit on a regular day each week, occasional days or in some cases several days a week depending on their need and availability of places at the club.

Sensory Garden

In March 2003 Members of the Rotary Club of South Perth ( now merged with Burswood Rotary Club) transformed the back yard of the Bickley Club house into a sensory garden. This allows clients to experience the delights of nature through touch, smell, sight, sound and taste. There are bird-attracting plants, colourful borders, perfumed shrubs and plants, a water feature, wind chimes, a pergola and garden benches where clients can sit and enjoy the peace of the garden. A small lawn is just large enough to play a game of bocce.

A combination of funds from the City of South Perth Community Funding programme, Southcare and Rotary enabled $6,500 to be spent on the project to create the sensory garden to be enjoyed by all clients and visitors.
