Community Visitors Scheme

The Community Visitors Scheme is a Federal Government funded initiative set up to address the needs of socially isolated residents of aged care facilities around Australia. It aims to increase the quality of life of the elderly individual in their final years. The scheme is a wonderful visiting program for older people living in aged care homes. Volunteers, who want to build a friendship with an older,  lonely and often isolated person,  are carefully matched to residents.  The scheme enriches the quality of an older person’s life through a regular visitor who offers companionship and reduces their feeling of being isolated from the community.

Such visits can significantly benefit the resident and also adds a new dimension to the life of the volunteer. Community visitors need to be reliable people with reasonable communication skills from all backgrounds. They must be over 18 years of age and willing to visit regularly, preferably weekly and on an ongoing, one-to-one basis.

All volunteers are carefully chosen and matched to a resident  in their area and supported by a Community Visitor Coordinator. A confidentiality agreement needs to be signed. A police clearance is arranged by Southcare. Mileage can be paid if required.
