Volunteering Opportunities
Volunteers are an important part of the team at Southcare. Without their ongoing support many of our programmes could not be offered. All volunteers are required to sign a confidentiality agreement and agree to Southcare obtaining a police clearance. Assistant Receptionist
Answering and redirecting telephone calls, greeting customers and clients, providing information. Helping with some administration which could involve updating databases, checking credentials of people looking for emergency relief etc checking and sorting mail.
Skills/qualities needed: Pleasant phone manner, friendly and helpful, non-judgmental. Some basic computer skills an advantage.
Shifts: 9am - 12:30pm or 12:30pm - 4pm Monday to Friday (most volunteers do one shift per week)

Emergency Relief Interviewer
Interviewing families and individuals requiring financial assistance. Offering referrals to support within Southcare or other organisations. Making notes and updating details in the database. Skills/qualities needed: Free accredited training and ongoing support is available, the main qualifications needed are to be non-judgemental, a good listener, life experience, a background in welfare, understanding of the financially disadvantaged and good communication skills. Some computer skills an advantage.
Shifts: 9.00 am – 1.30pm Monday to Friday (Most do one shift per week)

Mankara Low Cost Food Store
Weighing, packing, pricing, stocking shelves, assisting customers.
Skills/qualities needed: Ability to work as part of a team, friendly, patient and non-judgemental attitude, some lifting (stacking shelves), customer service skills and work on a till and give change, and dependable attendance.
Shifts: The shop is open 8.30am - 2.00pm Monday to Friday, most volunteers do one shift per week during those times, shifts can be of 3 - 5 hours in duration.

Opportunity Shop
Sorting, displaying stock, pricing items and assisting customers with their purchases. Work in a team of two or three.
Skills/qualities needed: Basic sales skills, ability to work independently and as a member of a team, effective communication skills, familiarity with handling money and giving change, punctuality and reliability and the ability to relate well to a diverse range of staff and clientele.
Shifts: The shop is open 9am - 1pm Monday to Friday. Most volunteers do one shift per week.

Community Visitors Scheme
Visiting isolated residents in local nursing homes and hostels to provide friendship and support. This needs to be on a regular basis and only needs a commitment of one hour a week. The scheme targets frail-aged or young people with a disability who may otherwise never get a visitor.
Skills/qualities needed: empathy with the aged and people with a disability, patience, caring and friendly. Will differ dependent on the resident but the most important thing is to be understanding and patient. As visitors are matched with residents there will usually be things in common —perhaps doing crosswords, reading, discussing favourite subjects.
Shifts: At least one visit per week, visits can be anywhere between 15 minutes or a couple of hours, depending on the health of the resident. Visits can be any day of the week.

New Horizons Day Respite Centre and Bickley Club
Kitchen/activities Assistant: helping to prepare and serve morning tea and lunch, clearing plates and kitchen clean-up afterwards. Assist clients to participate in activities such as games, craft and quizzes with the different groups.
Bickley Club – a homelike setting for people suffering dementia. Provides respite for carers and a supportive and understanding environment for their family member.
Skills/qualities needed: empathy with the aged, friendly, caring and the ability to work as part of a team.
Shifts: Kitchen/Activities - 9:30am - 1:30pm Tuesday to Friday
Bickley Club 10.00am – 4.00pm Monday to Friday

Volunteer Drivers
Drivers need to have current driving licences and pass a police clearance.
Duties: Drive clients to appointments which can vary from hospital visits, shopping, hairdressing, Doctors and other medical appointments. We need drivers who can volunteer on the same day each week. Hours vary according to the number of clients who need transport. Some clients do need assistance.
If the Southcare car is not available, we can pay mileage allowance for use of own vehicle which needs to be in roadworthy condition.
