This National Volunteer Week (20-26 May), there’s no better time to reflect on the power of giving back to your community. The theme this year is “there’s something for everyone” so if you’re considering how to make a meaningful impact, volunteering at Southcare could be the perfect opportunity. Today’s blog explores five reasons why:

1 Make a difference

Volunteering at Southcare allows you to directly impact the lives of individuals and families in need within your community. Whether it’s assisting with aged care services, supporting people with emergency relief, helping in our op shop or running community programs with the full support of our team, your contribution will make a real and tangible difference.

2 Build connections

Volunteering is not just about what you give, but also what you gain. When you volunteer at Southcare, you’ll be part of a welcoming and supportive team who share a passion for helping others. As humans we are wired for human connection, so what better place to start than by sharing your skills and building friendships?

3 Gain valuable experience

Whether you’re looking to develop new skills, enhance your resume, or explore career paths in social services, volunteering at Southcare provides valuable hands-on experience and training that can benefit you both personally and professionally. We welcome students, professionals who are re-training or returning to the workforce and retirees who have time to give back and are keen to learn too.

4 Promote well-being

By giving your time and energy to help others, you can experience a sense of fulfillment, purpose, and satisfaction that contributes to your overall happiness and mental health. Yes, volunteering is not only good for the community you are helping, but also good for you too!

5 Be rewarded

Southcare was started by volunteers in 1982 and we continue to celebrate and reward them today. By volunteering with us you receive full training, a supportive and inclusive culture, flexible days and hours to suit you, free parking, invitations to social celebrations, annual award events and gifts during National Volunteer Week for you to enjoy. Volunteers are the lifeblood of Southcare and we honour those who carry on this important tradition.

See what some of our team are saying…

“My husband, Michael was suffering with Dementia, and was assessed by Southcare for help in May 2016. Southcare started providing help in July 2016 doing things like gardening and domestic assistance in our large home, which was a great help. Getting this help made me wanted to make a contribution back to Southcare so I started volunteering in the op shop, and love it. We have a great team, it is very social and I love helping others, I encourage others to help others by with volunteering, not just in the op shop but many other areas too!”

Daphne, volunteer since 2020

“I facilitate a weekly board games night at Southcare with two other volunteers and we welcome everyone from the community to play and socialise with us, it’s fun! These nights give people the opportunity to come along by themselves and meet people of all ages and backgrounds, share a common interest and I enjoy bringing that to life, knowing I am helping do that. Southcare does a thorough induction program and is are very supportive of their volunteers. There are lots of ways to be involved in the community through Southcare, and to achieve satisfaction by helping others. It really feels like you belong to a community.
