The gift is in the giving
“Supporting local and offering a helping hand to those in the community I call home,” were the main motivators for Corrina who has joined our Emergency Relief and Community Support teams on a learning placement as part of her tertiary studies.
“I have lived in the City of South Perth for a long time and wanted a hands-on role to give back so that people can have dignity and feel they are valued members of this community.”
“Partnering with Southcare means I can help make this area an enjoyable and thriving place for everyone who lives here,” she said.
During her placement Corrina will be working with our team to give customers immediate assistance with their living situation, plus work behind-the-scenes developing referral pathways and building relationships with like-minded organisations to help extend the work Southcare has been doing for 40 years.
“I meet with customers in crisis and offer solutions to help them get back on their feet. It’s very rewarding,” she says.
“I tell them that there are no closed doors, so they understand their situation is temporary and help is available from the team here as well as other referral organisations who have a caring ethos too.”
Corrina is also furthering her policy experience with administrative functions that help Southcare does what it does best.
“I’m a bit of a policy and procedures nerd so getting my teeth into reviewing procedures and improving them where I can is exciting so they keep reflecting current and best practice,” she says.
“I’m hoping it’s something Southcare can continue to benefit from, long after my placement has concluded.”
Corrina has an Advanced Diploma in Community Sector Management, is currently studying a Bachelor Human Services and has worked in the not-for-profit sector in a variety of areas including aged care, community housing, mental health and most recently the disability sector.
Southcare offers placements to many undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as volunteers, many of which turn into paid employment. Opportunities to learn and give back exist right across the organisation, from administrative, human resources, marketing and finance to our community services team offering support to customers with financial and emergency assistance or creating connections in our op shop.
