Bridging gaps and building strength – Southcare’s Aboriginal Support Services

The Struggles Many Aboriginal Families Face
For many Aboriginal families in the City of South Perth, finding Aboriginal family support services can be challenging. While support is available, navigating complex systems and overcoming cultural barriers can make it difficult to access the right help. The lasting impact of systemic issues, combined with a lack of clear information, often leaves families unsure of where to begin.
According to the City of South Perth, 690 Aboriginal people (1.5% of the population) reside in the City of South Perth and research conducted by Moorditj Keila, a respected local Aboriginal community organisation, highlights the ongoing need for tailored services in Manning, Karawara, and Kensington.
At Southcare, we recognise these challenges and understand that Aboriginal support services should be accessible, culturally safe, and tailored to meet real needs.
The Need for Culturally Safe Support
Our journey with the Aboriginal community began in 1982 with emergency relief—providing food, clothing, and blankets to families in Karawara. While this was a small step, it established the foundation for a deeper connection.
Over time, Aboriginal Elders began gathering at our Social Centre, creating a space for community and understanding. Through these connections, it became clear that families required more than immediate assistance; they needed ongoing Aboriginal family support. This led to the establishment of our Aboriginal Family Support Service, which continues to provide essential services today.
Despite this progress, the demand for Aboriginal support services near me remains significant.
