Southcare Inc’s Emerging Young Leaders Program (ELP) launched on 28 January 2015. The program is part of the Engaging Young Leaders on Aged Care and Community Boards Program, a collaborative innovation which draws together not for profit organisations and talented young professionals to create diversity on aged care and community boards

Among the 20 young leaders accepted on this program were Alana Bernstein and Gabriel Lubieniecki-Reed. Alana is a solicitor at Jackson McDonald, who works with Aboriginal Corporations and Not-for-Profit organisations while Gabriel, a Program Manager at the Department of Corrective Services counts women’s rights and maintaining a thriving public service as the passions behind her membership of several professional committees and bodies. Other participants in the program have backgrounds in media, finance, employee relations and HR.

The ELP launch starts off an intensive program for the participants which includes leadership and industry training, mentor assistance, panel discussions, Board observation opportunities, site visits and team projects. Other highlights include the leadership retreat in February and a networking evening in March with members of ACORNS, a LinkedIn group created by the program for young professionals passionate about aged care and not for profit leadership and governance. Upon graduation many of these professionals will be equipped and aiming to secure their first internship or full Board position due to their participation in this program.

Also present at the launch, were representatives of the 25 Community Partner organisations who support this program financially and by providing experiential learning via board observations, internships and mentoring. Sue Doherty, Mayor of the City of South Perth said “I am pleased that the City of South Perth has embraced the opportunity to become a Community Partner of this Program. It is an exciting opportunity for young professionals to use, transfer and develop new skills to make a dynamic difference within Board governance in the aged care and not for profit sectors”. Community Partner organisations and program participants will gather together at a program Unconvention later in February to explore strategies to “Build the Board You Want“.
