As we age, maintaining independence and quality of life becomes increasingly important. Assistive Technology (AT) is transforming aged care by improving safety, mobility, communication, and overall well-being. Whether living independently at home or in a residential aged care facility, these advancements empower older Australians to live with dignity, confidence, and support.

With modern innovations, AT now extends beyond basic mobility aids to include smart home modifications (HM), wearable health monitors, and digital communication tools that bridge the gap between seniors and caregivers. These technologies not only enhance daily living but also provide peace of mind to families and caregivers.

Key benefits of assistive technology in home aged care

Improved mobility and safety

    • Mobility aids: Walkers, wheelchairs, and stairlifts help to move safely within the home
    • Smart home systems: Automated lighting, temperature control, and door locks to help prevent accidents
    • Fall detection and emergency alert devices: Provide an added layer of security by notifying caregivers in case of an emergency
    • Motion sensors: Detect movement and alert caregivers to unusual activity, reducing fall risks
    • Video doorbells: Provide the ability to see and communicate with visitors without opening the door, improving security

Enhanced communication and social connection

    • Voice-activated assistants and simplified smartphones: Enable the ability to stay connected with family and healthcare providers
    • Telehealth services: Facilitate virtual consultations, reducing the need for travel to medical appointments
    • Social engagement platforms: Video calling devices and messaging apps help to maintain relationships and avoid isolation.

Health monitoring and medication management

    • Wearable devices: Track vital signs such as heart rate and oxygen levels, helping in early detection of health issues
    • Automated medication dispensers: Reminders to take prescribed medications on time
    • Memory aids: Digital reminders, voice assistants, and smart calendars assist with daily tasks

Support for dementia and cognitive decline

    • GPS tracking devices: Help locate individuals who may wander due to conditions like Alzheimer’s
    • Assistive apps: Provide automated reminders to help manage daily tasks more effectively
    • Wander management systems: Help caregivers track individuals prone to wandering, ensuring their safety

Assistive Technology in residential aged care

In addition to supporting independent living at home, AT is also transforming residential aged care facilities by enhancing safety, communication, and quality of care.

    • Smart monitoring and safety features: Fall detection systems and adaptive lighting reduce accidents
    • Mobility and accessibility enhancements: Wheelchair-accessible modifications and lifting devices provide better support
    • Communication tools: Speech-generating devices and assistive listening devices improve interaction and engagement

Government Funded Assistive Technology in Australia

The Australian Government recognises the importance of AT in aged care and has the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) Scheme which provides funding for mobility aids, smart home devices, communication tools, and home modifications, ensuring that seniors can access the support they need to remain independent for longer.

With the introduction of the Support at Home program, from 1 July 2025, AT-HM will be funded separately across three main categories of:

    • Low risk: Everyday products that are simple, low-cost, and do not require a prescription or customisation
    • Under advice: Low-risk items that may benefit from professional advice to ensure correct selection, installation, or more
    • Prescribed: Items requiring a prescription from a qualified health professional

To access AT-HM scheme, the steps are:

    • an aged care assessment
    • allied health professional assessment and/or multidisciplinary case conferencing
    • from the assessment, the person may receive:
      • pre-approval for AT-HM that will be required as the condition progresses
      • immediate assignment or prescription of necessary AT-HM
      • referrals to specialised organisations for ongoing support and planning
    • AT-HM needed immediately is provided through loan or purchase, with associated wrap-around supports
    • future items may be accessed through the pre-approval process.

The future of Assistive Technology in aged care

As technology continues to evolve, new innovations will further enhance the lives of seniors. Advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, and smart home automation are expected to provide even greater levels of support, reducing reliance on caregivers while improving overall quality of life.

By integrating assistive technology into both home and residential aged care, seniors can maintain autonomy, stay socially engaged, and enjoy a higher standard of living. As adoption increases, it is essential to continue providing education and support to ensure that older Australians can fully benefit from these life-enhancing technologies.
