Southcare is calling on the community to help protect our aging community with the important message that “there is no excuse for elder abuse”.

Chief Executive Officer Dr Nicky Howe said 15 June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and a timely reminder to check in on your loved ones.

“While this day is important, every day should be acknowledged as elder abuse day because anything that causes harm to our seniors is abhorrent,” Dr Howe said.

“We don’t advocate behaviour or any act that causes harm to an older person when carried out by someone they know and trust such as a family member, friend or carer.”

“We receive ongoing training on this issue and are able to spot signs if this might be happening and what can be done if someone is suspected of being mistreated.”

“The abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect,” Dr Howe said.

Unfortunately, many cases of elder abuse are not reported. The Australian Institute of Family Studies estimates up to 14 per cent of older people in Australia are affected.

We are proud to wear purple in solidarity to highlight this cause today, and everyday.

Unfortunately, most elder abuse occurs behind closed doors, so it is important for us to watch out for signs, listen and offer help.

The warning signs of elder abuse may include an older person:

  • Acting in a fearful manner
  • Becoming increasingly anxious
  • Being withdrawn or isolated
  • Showing physical injuries
  • Experiencing an absence of personal care
  • Having unexplained changes to legal documents or finances

Please join us by checking in on your loved ones with the message that “There is no excuse for elder abuse.”
