Five benefits of volunteering at Southcare

At Southcare, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. From making friendly phone calls to customers, helping in the op shop, administering emergency relief, leading community programs and assisting with events and supporting our frontline team, volunteers play a vital role in helping older people stay independent and connected.
As Chief Executive Office Enda Fahy says: it’s more than giving back – it’s about belonging, growing and making a difference.
So, what do volunteers get in return?
Here are five meaningful benefits of volunteering at Southcare, straight from the people who live it every week.
1. A Strong sense of purpose
Many Southcare volunteers say that giving their time brings more meaning to their days.
“My job is to make people smile,” Nancy says, who started her volunteer journey with Southcare in 2001 and was awarded the Helen Moore Leadership and Service Award in 2025.
“Whether it’s making someone smile on the phone or helping a customer feel seen and heard, every act of service matters. “Volunteering gives me purpose, and I always feel fulfilled at the end of the day.”
2. Belonging to a caring community
When you volunteer at Southcare, you’re not just helping others—you’re joining a team that supports and values you. Volunteers are celebrated through regular social events, awarded at appreciation events and receive comprehensive training and support to foster genuine connection and camaraderie.
3. Learning new skills (or sharing yours!)
From administration to customer service to community engagement, there are so many ways to learn, grow and contribute. We offer full onboarding and training, and always match people to roles based on their interests, experience, and availability.
Some volunteers join us to further their skills and boost their employment prospects, and others choose to share their skills to inspire others.
Whether you’re looking to build your resume, return to the workforce, or simply try something new, there’s a place for you at Southcare.
4. Improved wellbeing and confidence
Studies show that volunteering improves mental health, reduces stress and increases life satisfaction—and we see that firsthand every day.
5. Leaving a lasting legacy
Southcare was founded by volunteers in 1982, and every person who joins continues that legacy. Your time and energy create a ripple effect that reaches far beyond a single task or day—it helps change lives for the better.
There’s something for everyone
Whether you can spare a few hours a week or a few days, there’s a volunteer role for you at Southcare. Our team will support you every step of the way.
