What is chair dancing?
Chair dancing is exactly what it sounds like — guided dance movements performed while seated and set to great music from across the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. The class offers gentle exercise that supports mobility, coordination and overall wellbeing, all within a relaxed and welcoming environment.
This 45-minute class is suitable for all abilities, including those who prefer low-impact movement or feel more comfortable staying seated. There’s no pressure to keep up and no dance experience needed — you are encouraged to move at your own pace and enjoy the experience.
Beyond the physical benefits, Chair Dancing is also about connection. It’s a chance to share a laugh, enjoy music together and feel part of a supportive community space where everyone is welcome.
The benefits of chair dancing
Staying active doesn’t have to mean standing up, keeping pace, or pushing your limits. Sometimes, the most powerful movement begins right where you are — seated, supported and smiling.
Chair dancing is a joyful, accessible way to move your body, lift your spirits and stay connected, all while seated. And the benefits go well beyond the music.
Gentle movement that supports your body
Chair dancing encourages safe, low-impact movement that can help improve flexibility, circulation and muscle strength. Movements are adapted to suit all abilities, making it ideal for people who may experience balance concerns, reduced mobility, chronic pain or fatigue.
By moving regularly, even in small ways, you’re helping your body stay supple and supporting your overall health — without pressure or strain.
A boost for balance and confidence
Many chair dance movements focus on posture, coordination and core strength. Over time, this can help support balance and stability, which are important for maintaining independence in everyday life.
Just as importantly, participating in movement in a supportive environment builds confidence — reminding you of what your body can do.
Feel-good benefits for your mind
Music has a wonderful way of lifting our mood, and when you combine it with movement, the benefits multiply. Chair dancing can help reduce stress, improve mood and increase energy levels.
There’s also the joy factor — laughter, rhythm and shared moments that leave you feeling lighter and more positive.
The playlist for Southcare’s chair dancing class covers all genres – 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and today!
Connection and community
Chair dancing isn’t just about exercise — it’s about connection. Moving together creates a sense of belonging and shared purpose. It’s a chance to meet others, enjoy social interaction and feel part of something welcoming and inclusive.
For many people, these social connections are just as valuable as the physical benefits.
Movement that meets you where you are
At Southcare, we believe staying active should feel encouraging, not intimidating. Chair dancing meets you exactly where you are — no experience needed, no pressure to perform, just an invitation to move in a way that feels right for you.
Small movements can make a big difference. And sometimes, the first step to feeling better doesn’t require standing at all.
We look forward to dancing with you!
