Smiling big in a role that makes others smile too
When Brenda moved to Australia, she was searching for more than just a new job – she was looking for purpose, and she found it in aged care.
Since 2023 Brenda has been a care worker at Southcare, helping older Australians stay independent and healthy at home and in the community and sharing her big smile and love of life with everyone she meets.
“I’ve always had a passion for helping others and making a meaningful difference,” Brenda says.
“When I arrived in Australia, I knew I wanted a role that matched that passion and aged care felt like home. It’s not just about being a helping hand; it’s about providing compassionate care that really matters.”
“One of my favourite parts of my job is the look on a customer’s face when they open the door and see me. That smile fills my heart with so much joy and reminds me exactly why I love what I do.”
For Brenda, the best parts of her role are simple but powerful: the people, variety, and flexibility.
“I love hearing stories, sharing laughs, and building real connections. No two days are the same and I like that. It keeps me learning and growing,” she says. “The flexibility also means I can juggle work, study, and my personal life in a way that works for me.”
Late last year, Brenda stepped into a new challenge, taking on additional responsibilities in Southcare’s office, essentially splitting her time caring for people at home and supporting the team behind the scenes.
“It’s the best of both worlds,” she says. “I still get to connect with the people we care for, while also helping make sure the schedule of all carers runs smoothly for everyone.”
Outside of work, Brenda recharges by running and walking – her way of staying active and clearing her mind. “I love to move, cook, read, spend time with friends and explore new places when I can,” she says.
Southcare Chief Executive Officer Enda Fahy says Brenda is just one of many carers and the time is now to recognise the important work they do.
“Carers are everyday heroes. Aged care workers who support people to live well at home, do a job that is deeply personal — it’s about connection, trust, dignity and kindness. Whether it’s helping someone get dressed, preparing a hot meal, providing transport, or simply listening with empathy, their impact is profound.”
“We are calling on the community to pause and think about the people who care for our loved ones — these people make a real difference,” Mr Fahy said.
As Brenda says: “This is such a rewarding path and deeply fulfilling. You grow as a person, and the connections you make stay with you.”
