Southcare calls on the community to say #ThanksForCaring this Aged Care Employee Day
Southcare is calling on the community to get behind Aged Care Employee Day by taking a moment to say a heartfelt #ThanksForCaring to the incredible people who care for our older Australians, and for the Federal Government to expedite the new Support at Home program.
From nurses and support workers to cleaners, gardeners, chefs, social club organisers and administrators — aged care employees are the quiet achievers who show up with compassion, professionalism and heart every single day.
Southcare CEO Enda Fahy says everyday is the time to recognise these everyday heroes.
“We’re asking our community to pause and think about the people who care for our loved ones — the people who make a real difference, often behind the scenes,” Mr Fahy said.
“Aged care workers support people to live well at home, and their work is deeply personal — it’s about connection, trust, dignity and kindness. Whether it’s helping someone get dressed, preparing a hot meal, providing transport, or simply listening with empathy, their impact is profound.”
This year is a significant one as we embrace the Government’s Support at Home program, something our team supports because it puts the care participant at the centre of care.
“We are also calling on the Federal Government to urgently release more details about the Support at Home program, which is due to start on 1 November 2025. Greater clarity is needed around service design, funding models and operational requirements so aged care providers can fully prepare and adopt the changes in a way that puts older Australians first.
“Our sector needs clear, timely information so we can plan with confidence,” Mr Fahy said.
“Our workforce is ready — we just need the right tools, the right timeframes and the right guidance to keep delivering high-quality care without disruption.”
“If you know someone who works in aged care, you should acknowledge their service everyday the time, but I particularly urge you to do that this week,” Mr Fahy said.
“Send a message, write a note, or give them a call. Let them know their work matters — because it does.”
