Local families struggling with the rising cost of living have received a lifeline thanks to a $100,000 Lotterywest grant awarded to Southcare by Member for South Perth Geoff Baker MLA as the emergency relief service re-opens this week, ensuring timely support for those in need.

Southcare’s Chief Executive Officer, Enda Fahy, said the grant directly supports vulnerable community members with food vouchers, rent assistance, and utility payments.

“This funding ensures that people at risk can avoid having their power or gas disconnected, feed their families, and access essential items that many of us take for granted,” Mr Fahy said.

“In addition, recipients will have access to free financial counselling through Southcare’s team meaning we can address the root causes of their challenges and help them navigate a pathway to greater independence.”

Every week, Southcare sees scores of people seeking assistance at its Manning headquarters.

“The cost of living continues to rise sharply, leaving already disadvantaged families facing increasing financial strain and we see people cutting back on food, clothing and everyday essentials just to keep a roof over their heads,” Mr Fahy said.

“In 2024 inflation remained high at 4% while wages increased only 3.75% percent. People are anxious to find out what will happen to grocery prices after supermarket prices rose more than 9% in recent years.

“Customers on low or no incomes and who rent are at risk of being homeless due to increased rent rates and a lack of affordable housing. Perth’s median rent price was $650 per week in March 2024 which is 16% higher than March 2023, resulting in the rental affordability crisis we are in now,” Mr Fahy said.

Mr Baker echoed the financial pressures many families face.

“Everyone deserves the basic rights of food, housing, and support. While the Government’s focus on cost of living measures have been a relief to many, we can always do more. By addressing systemic issues through professional advice, Southcare is helping help individuals achieve greater freedom and self-worth, enabling them to lead lives of purpose and independence. I’m delighted to present this Lotterywest grant today.”

Southcare’s emergency relief services are available free of charge to City of South Perth residents between 10am and 1pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Assistance is confidential, and residents should call Southcare on 9450 6233 to check eligibility before arriving.

Last year, Southcare supported 1,305 individuals with emergency relief and financial counselling services and since its founding in 1982, has been a cornerstone of community support.
