Dementia friendly singing group launches at Southcare

A new dementia-friendly singing group run by Songfest and specifically tailored for people living with young onset dementia (YOD) has launched at Southcare and all eligible people are encouraged to attend along with their support person and friends.
Called “The Young Ones”, the group will meet every Monday from 1pm to 3pm at Southcare’s John Hardwick Centre in Manning to share experiences and create joyful moments through music.
Each session includes time for singing, socialising and enjoying afternoon tea together. It’s a relaxed, supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to participate at their own pace.
SongFest supports community singing in a variety of ways. Since 2020, it has operated the much-loved Friends in Harmony group and now operates several such groups. We’re proud to help them connect and support people diagnosed with dementia under the age of 65 to create a welcoming, joyful space for them to reminisce through music.
Why singing?
Singing has been shown to offer a wide range of benefits for people living with dementia — from reducing stress and anxiety to boosting mood, memory, and social connection. Best of all, you don’t need any musical background or singing experience to join — just a love of music and a willingness to give it a go.
