Free seasonal produce, affordable groceries now in Manning thanks to Foodbank at Southcare
With the rising cost of living, it’s now easier for people in crisis to access affordable, nutritious food with the launch of a weekly Mobile Foodbank at Southcare in Manning.
The Mobile Foodbank visits Southcare every Monday between 11.30am – 12.30pm, helping people in crisis stretch their budget with free seasonal fruit, vegetables and bread plus low-cost, nutrient-rich groceries, frozen meats and meals.
Southcare Community Services Manager Duncan Edgar said food relief just got easier.
“We are sending a very clear message to people that if rising living costs are making it harder to put food on the table, help is available right here.” Mr Edgar said.
“This service is about extending our emergency relief service with dignity and choice and allows people in the community to access what they need to feed themselves and their family in a way that suits them, plus the frequency will help with weekly budget management.
“The Mobile Foodbank is packed full of seasonal produce, pantry staples like pasta sauces, rice, cereal and flour plus special items including personal care, cleaning supplies and even treats like biscuits, muesli bars and chocolate,” he said.
In the last 12 months Southcare has helped 1,308 people regain their independence with community support including emergency relief, financial counselling and Aboriginal family support.
“Food relief is an ongoing theme and many people we see simply go without or change their buying habits to feed others in their family and not themselves. Accessing healthy food is a basic human right and we are delighted to have this service here as an extension to the work we have long been doing”.
Anyone can access the Mobile Foodbank so long as they have a valid Foodbank referral. This can be arranged by Southcare’s Community Support team or in person when presenting for assistance. Due to demand, preference is for people to pre-register before arriving.
You’ll find the Mobile Foodbank in the secure carpark at 54 Bickley Crescent, Manning. Foodbank accepts EFTPOS only for paid items and will serve visitors in order of arrival until supplies run out.
“This service is here for you — to help stretch your budget, keep your pantry stocked, and make sure you and your family can enjoy good, healthy meals,” Duncan said.
