Giving back, helping people and helping herself is what motivates 67-year-old Nancy Seaman to keep volunteering; something she has done on and off all her life, and this year sees her awarded the Helen Moore Leadership and Service Award for the work she does at Southcare.

“Volunteering is simply the right thing to do,” Nancy says.  “It gives me purpose and I always feel fulfilled at the end of day,” she says.

Nancy volunteers two days a week, and extra when needed, in the Southcare office, making social calls to customers, scheduling in-home care visits, and helping onboard new clients. Her caring hands and warm voice provide vital connection and support—especially for those who may be feeling isolated.

“Knowing that Southcare was started by volunteers in 1982 makes me feel proud to be part of that legacy,” she added.

“I might be just one person, but I feel part of something much bigger thanks to the amazing team around me.”

For Nancy, the journey to volunteering was personal.

“After my husband passed away, I was lost,” she said. “We were together for 22 years, and suddenly I was alone. I knew I needed to find a way forward—to get out of the house and reconnect with life. Volunteering gave me that opportunity.”

It’s no surprise that Nancy chose a path of service. Her professional background includes 14 years at Mount Henry Hospital and roles in occupational therapy and welfare support, along with firsthand experience as a carer for her late husband.

Chief Executive Officer Enda Fahy said Nancy’s award echoes the traits of Helen Moore, who was Southcare’s longest serving volunteer for 32 years.

“Helen displayed leadership, trustworthiness, professionalism and being a team player and that’s what we look for in all volunteers who help us continue our purpose of proactively caring for people and the community.

“Nancy consistently receives praise from her colleagues and customers alike, and I was delighted to present her with the 2025 Helen Moore Leadership and Service Award.

National Volunteer Week runs from 19-25 May and the theme this year is Connecting Communities.
