Southcare strengthens Board with three key appointments

Southcare has strengthened its governance capability with the appointment of three highly experienced professionals to its Board, welcoming Steven Unwin, Susan Mylne and Eileen Hordern as Independent Board Members, with Steven also taking on the role of Treasurer.
The appointments come as Southcare approaches the first anniversary of the commencement of the Aged Care Act 2024, and continues to embed significant aged care reforms.
Chief Executive Officer Enda Fahy said he welcomed the appointments as Southcare entered its next phase of growth and continuous improvement.
“The aged care sector is operating in an increasingly complex environment, with stronger compliance requirements and higher expectations around governance, quality and accountability following the introduction of the Aged Care Act 2024,” Enda said.
“As we move beyond implementation and focus on embedding these changes into everyday practice, it is critical that we have the right skills, expertise and oversight around the Board table.”
“Steven, Susan and Eileen bring exceptional experience across finance, healthcare, aged care, governance and organisational leadership. Their collective expertise will strengthen Southcare’s ability to meet its obligations, pursue strategic opportunities and continue delivering high-quality aged care and community services.”
Financial and Governance Expertise
Appointed Treasurer, Steven Unwin brings more than 20 years of experience in financial management, accounting and commercial leadership across the mining services, construction, oil and gas, education, media and not-for-profit sectors.
Currently Financial Controller at Hosch International, Steven oversees financial operations across Australia and Indonesia and has extensive experience working with executive teams and boards on financial strategy, risk management, governance and sustainable growth. He is a member of CPA Australia, the Institute of Public Accountants, the Association of Taxation and Management Accountants and the Institute of Certified Management Accountants.
Health System Leadership
Susan Mylne joins the Board as an Independent Member, bringing extensive experience in healthcare strategy, planning, reform and commissioning in both Australia and the United Kingdom.
Her leadership roles have included commissioning Fiona Stanley Hospital, leading WA Health’s Sustainable Health Review and serving as Executive Director, Clinical Strategy, Planning and Performance at East Metropolitan Health Service. Susan has overseen major health service developments and transformational programs, including the successful transition of the former St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital into public operations.
With a passion for integrated models of care, Susan is committed to ensuring services continue to meet the changing needs of the community.
Aged Care and Clinical Governance Expertise
Independent Member Eileen Hordern brings extensive experience across health and aged care, having held leadership positions spanning clinical practice, operational management, quality, risk, compliance and governance in Australia, the United Kingdom and the Middle East.
As General Manager Quality, Risk and Compliance at Rosewood Care Group, Eileen leads initiatives that support safe, high-quality and person-centred care. A registered nurse and midwife, she is recognised for her expertise in clinical governance, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement, including implementation of the Aged Care Act 2024 and strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards.
Thanking our outgoing Board members
As part of the Board transition, Southcare also acknowledges the significant contribution of outgoing Directors Mario Gomes and Ben See, who have completed their Board service.
Mario steps down after reaching the maximum Board tenure of 10 years, while Ben steps down after five years, including the past three years as Treasurer.
Enda thanked both directors for their dedication, professionalism and commitment to Southcare’s mission.
“Strong governance relies on the generosity of people willing to contribute their expertise in service of the community. On behalf of Southcare, I thank Mario and Ben for their valuable contribution and lasting impact on the organisation.”
