Southcare’s commitment to tackling loneliness and social isolation has been recognised this week with Auspire naming its Community Connect program the best in the City of South Perth.

The program won the Active Citizenship (Group or Event) Award for its significant contribution to the local area and enhancement of community life.

Chief Executive Officer Enda Fahy said the community connect program is a volunteer-led initiative administered by Southcare to bring people together in safe and supportive ways.

“The idea is to get people out of their homes and meet others over a shared interest, using our spaces much like one big welcoming living room!,” Enda said.

Current free activities run as part of the program include:

The win coincides with the program’s expansion, with Southcare calling for expressions of interest from volunteers to join and give back to their community.

“If you have an idea for an activity that brings the community together, let us help you bring it to life!” Enda said.

“Volunteers have exclusive use of our spaces for free, we cover the cost of insurance and marketing so all that is needed is energy, enthusiasm and a willingness to serve the community.

“We are exploring ideas now for a book club and non-combat boxing but the ideas to connect really are unlimited so we welcome ideas from everyone for almost anything. Make this the year to connect!”

“Naturally we’re thrilled with this endorsement of the work we do and hopefully it inspires others to join in, either as a participant or to lead new clubs this year.”

Data from Relationships Australia shows 1 in 4 people aged 65 or over live alone and many don’t talk to another person for days on end.  Social isolation has been linked to mental and physical decline, and in the worst scenario: premature death.

In the last 12 months, Southcare’s programs delivered 5,216 volunteer hours, representing a social impact contribution of $250,420.
Auspire is the Australia Day Council of WA and its Community Citizen of the Year Awards recognise outstanding contribution by local people and groups to local communities throughout WA.

Those unable to volunteer can still support the program by donating to help it grow.
