February is Heart Health Month: Show your heart some love

February isn’t just about chocolates and roses. It’s also the perfect reminder to show your heart a little love. Caring for your heart doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, steady habits can help you stay active and independent at home for longer. This is your nudge to give your heart the attention it deserves.
Southcare’s Registered Nurse Alana Thompson said this February, during Heart Health Month, we are reminded that caring for our heart does not need to be complicated.
“For seniors receiving aged care at home, heart health is not just a medical topic. It is about feeling strong enough to enjoy daily life, stay connected to loved ones, and remain safely at home for longer,” she said.
“It starts with small, steady habits and the support of a caring community.”
Why your heart matters
Your heart works tirelessly every moment of your life. Giving it a little extra care helps you to stay energetic, steady on your feet and able to enjoy the moments that bring you joy.
Cardiovascular disease remains one of the most common health concerns among older Australians and is closely linked to mobility, cognitive health, and overall wellbeing.
“As we age, natural changes to the heart and blood vessels can increase the risk of cardiovascular conditions, often with symptoms that develop gradually and are easy to overlook,” Alana said.
“Lifestyle habits and regular health checks play a significant role in managing this risk. Behind every statistic is a real person, a neighbour, a parent, or a grandparent, which is why awareness, education, and compassionate support matter.”
Simple habits to support your heart
- Move a little every day – even 10–15 minutes of walking helps
- Choose colourful foods – fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein
- Keep an eye on your blood pressure – regular checks make a difference
- Stay hydrated – your heart loves water
- Limit salt where you can – instead try paprika, or herbs
- Take medications as prescribed – consistency keeps your heart steady
- Stay connected – good company is good for your heart
- Aim for a restful sleep – a steady routine helps your body recharge

A reminder
Listening to your body is one of the most important steps in early intervention.
Look out for unusual tiredness after simple tasks, shortness of breath during light activity, chest tightness or pressure, discomfort in the jaw, neck, shoulders or arms, swelling in the lower legs or you just feel ‘off’.
If symptoms are new or worsening, seek medical advice immediately.
“Early intervention makes a big difference,” Alana said.
Keep your heart happy
Heart Health Month is a reminder that care, connection, and small daily choices can make a meaningful difference. Start in February and your heart will thank you all year.
